SparkLearning: Inspire the Next Generation of Innovators
About the School
SFIHS has 390 students speaking more than a dozen languages. Of our student population, most are very recent arrivals to the U.S. Of our student population, 98% are eligible for free and reduced lunch. Approximately 35% come to us with interrupted formal education having been in refugee camps, detention centers, or coming from countries that were not able to offer regular schooling.
Not only do we prepare our students to be college and career ready by making English proficiency a central goal for all students, but we also want students to be fully computer literate. However, our school currently only has one computer lab with 25 outdated desktops to serve our 390 students. This means that students in the classroom frequently do not have access to computers when they need them.
Research shows that it takes 5-9 years to attain academic proficiency in a second language. Our students only have 2-3 years to accomplish this. Because of their hard work and dedication, many would like to stay after after school for tutoring or online courses, but we simply do not have enough computers to serve all of our students in this way.
Why We Need Your Help
We are seeking to raise $50,000 for a new iMac computer lab for our school. Our current crusty computers run Windows XP - an outdated operating system, both in terms of technical support and use in the world. Having a functional and up-to-date lab at our school will allow our students to access Google drive, complete online college applications, facilitate student-to-student and student-to-teacher collaboration, and prepare them to be technology ready for college.
The 'stretch' goal of $51,800 will allow us to install a 2-year licensed copy of Adobe Creative Cloud on 3 of the new machines. This professional software suite, which includes Photoshop, Illustrator, and After Effects, is the defacto choice for creative digital work. Experience in these software titles is invaluable for any student interested in graphic/web design and video production.
Our school is dedicated to the integration of technology into project-based learning. However, with so many students and so few computers (our ratio is 1 computer to 8 students), the use of computers in one classroom for a 2-3 week project becomes a serious challenge. We are dedicated to providing the best education possible for our students, to closing the achievement gap, and to helping each student to reach their full potential.
Our students are amazing. They have endured many challenges and overcome many hardships. We appreciate that you have taken the time to read this and we hope that we can work in solidarity to attain our goal. We invite you to become part of our community at SFIHS and to work together to create change.
